One thing I’ve been thinking about over the past couple of years is the use of the word “inspired” in our dance vocabulary. There has been a lot of discussion amongst dancers of USA-derived Fusion styles about the terminology we use and how it represents the MEHAHT source material.

I want to share with you something I have been working on with my dance partners in Brighton… We’ve been studying and listening and trying to figure out a way forward that feels ethical, authentic and aligned with what we’ve been learning and how our views have changed and continue to evolve.

I was overwhelming myself with the mammoth task of trying to study so many of the potential influences of MENAHT and African Diaspora Transcultural Fusion.
It lead to me getting quite stuck and feeling pretty demotivated to dance.

What is Transcultural Fusion

This year, prompted by wide and varied discussions within the dance community, I’ve been doing a lot of thought regarding the dance style(s) I teach and perform, particularly with regard to terminology, costume and music choices.
